Visit of the Underwater Park of Baia

Archeological area Visit of the Underwater Park of Baia

The submerged park of Baia is a marine protected area located on the coast of the province of Naples north of the Gulf of Naples.

Established in 2002 by joint decree of the Minister of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and that for Cultural Heritage and Activities, the area represents, together with the submerged park of Gaiola, a unique example in the Mediterranean of underwater archaeological and naturalistic protection.

The two protected areas, located on land in the wider context of the Phlegraean Fields Park under the jurisdiction of the Campania Region, are aimed precisely at the protection and study of archaeological finds submerged in these areas together with the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The particularity of these areas is linked to the volcanic phenomenon of bradyseism that has always affected the entire northern coast of the Province of Naples. This phenomenon has caused vertical movements of the area with positive and negative excursions of many meters causing in the last 2000 years the sinking of the Roman coastline of about 6/8 meters. Around the first century BC, in fact, the entire coastal area north of Naples was a thriving health resort, made fashionable by the presence of an imperial villa, the Pausilypon, which gave its name to the Promontory of Posillipo, built by the rich freedman Publio Vedio Pollione. On his death in 15 B.C., he named Augustus the heir of all his possessions, including Pausilypon. Later enlarged and embellished as imperial property, this place seems to have seen the tragic end of the conspiracy against the emperor Nero. Moreover, the remains of the commercial ports of Baia (Lacus Baianus) and the Portus Julius are submerged on this coast. Further north was the port of Capo Miseno, the historical seat of the Roman Imperial Fleet.

The extraordinary value of these sites is given both by the remarkable state of conservation of archaeological finds, as well as by their objective historical and archaeological value. Mosaics, traces of frescoes, sculptures, road tracks and columns, are submerged about 5 meters below sea level between starfish anemones and schools of chestnuts. Moreover, the presence of valuable submerged ecosystems such as the pre-coralligenous seabed and communities of marine phanerogams (essentially Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa) make these places environments of significant natural value, recognized as such by both Italian and Community legislation. The place is extraordinarily suggestive, and makes this stretch of the seabed a small Roman Atlantis.
