Inside an amazing territory as far as both naturalistic and geological aspects and archaeological ones are concerned, there is a very particular collection preserved inside the Aragonese Castle of Baia, in the town of Bacoli. This is the Archaeological Museum of the Campi Flegrei which preserves Roman finds from the territories west of Naples, a real treasure chest of priceless treasures.

The Museum, the territory and the archaeological collections

The museum itinerary is divided into rooms, each of which preserves extraordinary finds from the Roman era coming mainly from: the Rione Terra in Pozzuoli, the Sacello degli Augustali in Miseno, the plaster casts found at the Terme di Baia (remains of work carried out by local sculptors engaged in making copies of Greek works), from the Ninfeo of Punta Epitaffio in Baia. Other sections, dedicated to the Roman city of Liternum and Baia are temporarily closed. The reconstructions of the Sacellum of the Augustals and of the Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio are particularly distinctive and deserve to be observed with great attention.

Tenaglia Tower

The first environment, situated in the so-called Tenaglia Tower of the castle, hosts an important reconstruction of the facade of the Sacellum of Miseno. It is formed by the pronaos, that is the space in front of the entrance, where the four columns rise. It is therefore a tetrastyle temple, around which rise the various statues originally placed in the cell inside the temple itself, including the statues of Vespasian and Titus portrayed in heroic nudity. A joint visit to the archaeological site before visiting the museum is absolutely recommended.

As for the Nymphaeum instead, it was wanted by Emperor Claudius and today because of the phenomena of bradyseism is sunk to 7 meters below sea level. It is an environment formed a rectangular plan, closed by a sort of apse where is evoked a scene from the Odyssey. The long niches of the walls were adorned with statues inspired by Hellenistic principles of the second century BC, of which only some have been recovered and restored. Note the fact that the Romans in fact accepted the Greek culture both in terms of artistic works and literal ones.

In addition to these major reconstructions within the path you can make a focus on the greek-roman statuary, vase painting, or that of ceramic vessels decorated with myths and legends and also on the history of engineering mold Roman Empire. The museum also rightly tends to contextualize this important piece of Western history by making so much reference to the territory of the Campi Flegrei area.

Campi Flegrei Area

The entire Campi Flegrei area is comprised of the municipalities of Bacoli, Monte di Procida, Pozzuoli, Quarto, Giugliano in Campania and Naples. In particular, the first three municipalities mentioned, form the so-called Phlegraean Peninsula, from which it is possible to admire the views of Ischia and Procida. The western area of the municipality of Naples, with the districts of Bagnoli, Fuorigrotta, Pianura, Posillipo, Soccavo and the localities of Agnano Terme (part of the district of Bagnoli) and Pisani (part of the district of Pianura) falls within the Phlegrean fields. All these areas, which are narrated and described inside the museum are of important biological and natural value, with places such as Capo Miseno, the Underwater Park of Baia, Monte Nuovo and the Crater of Astroni.
